Rita Elizabeth Thorpe, 67, of New Haven, entered eternal rest on Saturday, May 28, 2022. She was the widow of Phillip D. Thorpe and mother of David Ellis, Sr.

Her final days were spent surrounded by loving family and friends.

Rita was born November 29, 1954, to the late Richard Ellis and Rosemary Coleman Ellis.

She was a long-time member of St. Matthew’s UFW Baptist Church, New Haven, CT. She would support the programs at the church, lending a helping hand when needed.

Rita was a graduate of Hillhouse High school, class of 1972. She received her Associate Degree in Merchandising & Retailing from Briarwood College in 1980. She married the love of her life Phillip Thorpe on September 3, 2011.

Rita was employed by Yale University prior to retiring. During her earlier years she was employed by Cornell Scott – Hill Health Center, Connecticut National Bank, Horowitz Brothers Fabric Store & Winchester Repeating Arms Co.

She was a professional seamstress. Her garments included wedding gowns, prom dresses, and so much more. Her work has been worn by so many. Rita took pride in the details of each garment. When she wasn’t sewing, Rita collected numerous recipes over many years to share and cook for family and friends. She enjoyed traveling to Jamaica and cruising. Finding designer clothing in secondhand shops gave her great joy.

Rita’s life and presence touched many people who came in contact with her. She will be missed by all who knew her, she will forever be in our hearts.

Along with her son, she also leaves to cherish her memories, 3 grandchildren, David Jr., Brandunn and Summer Ellis; two Sisters, Regina McDowell and Monica Ellis of New Haven, CT; Aunts: Ellwood J. Coleman, New Haven, CT, Rose Coleman and Georgianna Coleman, Hamden, CT, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was predeceased by husband Phillip D. Thorpe.

Memorial Services will be held Thursday, June 23, 2022, at 6:30 pm, St. Matthew’s UFW Baptist Church, 400 Dixwell Avenue, New Haven CT.
