Mattie Belle Murphy Harrison, daughter of the late Benjamin Hoesteller and the late Katherine Murphy, was born in Kershaw County, SC on April 12, 1932, and departed this life, on January 16, 2023, at the age of 90.

(Ms) Mattie grew up in South Carolina and moved to New Haven, Connecticut to start her adult life and raise a family with her former husband Johnnie Harrison. After raising their six daughters, she began working as a paraprofessional in the New Haven school system. She worked at Celentano School for many years until she retired at the age of 75. Some of her passions were gardening, sewing, cooking, and baking (sweet potato pies). She was an amazing mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, colleague and friend. She touched the lives of so many people and will truly be missed.

She is preceded in death by her former husband, Johnnie Harrison, four daughters, Jacqueline Truesdale, Beverly Harrison, M. Diana Harrison(baby twin) and Phyllis Harrison; one grandson David Harrison; and her six siblings Willie Murphy, Sally (Lila) Swinson, Naomi King, Edna Ingraham , Sanders Murphy, and Melvin Murphy . Her memory and legacy lives on with her three daughters, Mattie Roberta Spann (Elijah), Marilyn Denise Griffith, and Gail A. Harrison-Streater; Fourteen grandchildren Tamille Barrett (LaMarr), Jason Spann, Andrè Turpin (Kristin), Jeffrey Spann, Jaymie Turpin, Marisa Spann (Dustin), Shana Harrison Edwards (Lemaine), Troy Griffith, Katharyn Turpin, Monika Griffith, Paul Harrison (Felicia), Krystlè Harrison, Levar Smith (Jeffrey), and Phylicia Smith; a continually growing generation of great grandchildren; one great great grandson; two sisters-in-law Elizabeth Louise Murphy and Lucille Harrison; three nieces Bettye Belton, Lauren Murphy, and Kara Ingraham;; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 23, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St, New Haven, CT 06511. The viewing will be held from 10:00-11:00 AM. The burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
