Thomas Robert Ficklin, Jr., affectionately known as Tom was born on July 10, 1949, to Thomas Robert Ficklin Sr. and Emily (Snell) Ficklin in Pittsburgh, PA.

Tom attended elementary through eighth grade in Pittsburgh, PA. In ninth grade, he was accepted to the Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, CT by way of the A Better Chance (ABC) Program. Following his years at Choate, Tom continued to Academic Paths, which led him to Bucknell University for his undergraduate degree in Political Science. Upon graduating from Bucknell, he continued his education at the Yale University Divinity School.

What do we say about “the Tom Ficklin” that the multitude of people he has encountered throughout the community over the years would not have seen or have the gift of experiencing.

That he was a private, quiet man whose greatest joy was his family. That he valued having a soulmate that knew and understood all the components of Tom Ficklin that only a soulmate would be capable of understanding and loving. The Tom Ficklin that did everything in a “different” way. He loved differently, he spoke differently, and he lived in an organic and different manner that was authentic to who he was.

Left to cherish Tom’s “stroke of genius” and his majestic legacy is his wife and soulmate, Julia Ficklin (also known as Sweets), son Toma O. Brown (Kendra), grandsons Lamar Coburn and Toma O. Brown Jr., great grand-daughters Zyia Reese Coburn and Solvi Rain Brown. In addition, he also leaves to cherish his memory a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

The Honorable Alderman Tom Ficklin will be forever missed, but all the lessons he instilled in us will forever be embedded in our hearts.

A Memorial service to celebrate Tom Ficklin’s life and legacy will be held Thursday, October 17, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Battell Chapel, 400 College St., New Haven. There will be no repast held following the service.
