Mary Lucky A.K.A. Mary Lou, also affectionately known by the nickname given to her by her father “Rooster” of Hamden, departed this life on June 20, 2021. She was born in Darlington, SC on June 3, 1952 to the late Waitus Lucky and Gladys Mae Lucky.
She graduated in 1971 from Mayo High School where she was “MISS DRIVER EDUCATION” and then moved to New Haven. She got a job as a Key-Punch Operator at Michaels; a few years later worked at Planned Parenthood; and then Women’s Health Services. She finished up at AAA Road Service as a Dispatcher where she left due to a disability in 2008.
Mary loved to dance. Years before the movie “Flashdance” you would find her half-clad, staring at her reflection in the Living Room as she moved to the blaring sounds of Donna Summers “Last Dance.” She was smart and extremely competitive. A trait she instilled in her only child whom she would play Backgammon, cards, and Atari with, only to get mad if she didn’t win.
She leaves to cherish loving memories: only son, X-Shanti Lucky (companion – Maryann Lynette Williams); ex-husband and companion, Ray Campbell; sisters, Aurelia Elder(James), Virginia Hodges, Maryann Thomas (Norman), Ida Mae Amos and Bessie Gilbert (Bobby); 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; bonus daughter, Theresa Ervin; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends whom loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her siblings Benzenia Lucky Cox, Leroy John Lucky, and Lizzie Mae Bacote.
A celebration of Mary’s life and legacy will be held Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at 11:00 A.M. at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. Viewing will be held from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park. The celebration of life may be live-streamed via the following link: https://youtu.be/2EUByav4M-g

I have so many wonderful memories of aunt Mary Louise. As a child, she lavished love on me and my sisters. She was beautiful, fun, and had all the best records. She was the ultimate “cool aunt.” As we all grew up and moved in different directions, her love has stayed with me. I know that she is at peace with her heavenly Father now. Rest in Paradise, auntie. I love you!
