Joan Marie Kinney passed away peacefully at the age of 74 on June 7, 2022, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, while in the loving care of her family in Hamden, CT.
Joan was born on June 28, 1947 to Rev. Leroy Kinney and Agnes Trent Scott Kinney. She was the youngest of four children and the only daughter. She was born and raised in the Cismont/Keswick Virginia area, and was educated in the Charlottesville/Albemarle County School System, graduating from Burley High School in 1965.
Joan was a lifelong resident of Virginia. She lived in Northern Virginia and the Tidewater area for many years, until her recent move several months ago to Hamden to live with her son and daughter-in-law due to her illness.
Joan was raised in a Christian home and, for many years, was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church located in Keswick, VA. She later joined Gospel Light United Holy Church located in Newport News, VA where she was a faithful member. Joan had a very gentle and kind spirit, regardless of the situations that she faced. She was also very compassionate and empathetic. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved her family and others without limits and was always happy to cook delicious meals for them, especially potato salad, collard greens, scalloped potatoes, and fried chicken. Some of her most remarkable characteristics were her grace, poise, and sense of humor; she could find humor in almost any situation.
Joan worked in the banking industry for many years, starting her career at Virginia National Bank in the early 1970s in Charlottesville. She retired from Bank of America in Norfolk in 2015. She was an avid reader, enjoyed listening to Jazz music, and always enjoyed a challenging game of Scrabble. She also enjoyed shopping for antiques and frequented antique and thrift stores, often coming home with her prized unique finds.
In addition to her remarkable gentleness, Joan’s legacy includes her children, Robert Kinney, Sr. (Dinah) of Hamden, CT and Misty Morgan (Albert) of Newport News, VA; ten grandchildren, Tashana (Shawn), Robert Jr. (Nollysha), Trent, Ty, Destiny, Taijha, Jaden, Sanai, Tristan, and Bella; five great-grandchildren, Giancarlo, Elijah, Azalia, Nolyn, and Hope; brothers, Allen Kinney (Shirley) of Lorton, VA, Leonard Kinney(Eunice) of St. Louis, MO, and Vincent Kinney (Dana) of Monterey, VA; special cousin, Anthony Scott (Lisa) of Kent Store, VA; and a host of other relatives, extended sons, and special friends.
Joan was predeceased by her parents; maternal grandmother, Florine Scott; aunts, Amalie Scott and Florence Michie; and niece, Alicia Kinney.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the dedicated employees of Compassus Hospice Care and Shirley Garland for the extra special care and attention that she extended to “Grandma”.
A celebration of Joan’s life will be held on June 15, 2022. Viewing at 10:00 a.m. and Service at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 802 Zion Hill Road, Keswick, VA.
“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39
My sincere condolences to my brother Robert and family. I pray God’s strength upon you! Continued blessings and an abundance of love! Your Sister Sharon (Niecey)
I want to express my deepest heartfelt sympathy to you all during this time. Joan will be sorely missed and I am so glad that I did get to speak with her.
