Elder Joyce Cables-Newton, born October 12th, 1935. She was a Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Ordained Minister, Evangelist, Author, Humanitarian, Teacher, and Mentor. Joyce is the daughter of the late Leonard H. Cables and the Dr. Rev. Emma R. Cables. Joyce graduated from Hillhouse High School, and is a third generation Minister, having attended the Southern New England Regional Bible School, the Boulden Seminary and Biblical Institute, and Hartford Seminary to enhance her knowledge in Christian Education. Joyce received her license to Minister in 1997, became an Ordained elder in 2005, and in 2010 she was certified for Pastoral Counseling at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

She was the Founder and President of Women on The Move for Christ Within Our Communities, and facilitated annual conferences, and seminars and workshops for women, as well as holding community prayer meetings. The organization she founded here in New Haven was formerly known as the Christian Women’s Fellowship originating in Levittown, Pa. in 1986. She was the first woman of color to be elected to the New Haven Chapter of Church Women United, and was a teacher of Christian education for the Connecticut Branch of the First Saturday Community Prayer Group in Bristol, PA.

In 2001 she was the recipient of the Christian Leadership and Human Service Award presented by Christ Chapel New Testament Church here in New Haven, and in 2004 she received the Golden Girls Humanitarian Award presented by Mt. Hebron Church. She had also been a part of the ministerial staff at Wayside Community Church in Burlington, NJ, and P.O.W. Ministries in Greensboro, NC. In 2018, Joyce was privileged to take her ministerial efforts to Liberia creating another opportunity for her to be of service and spread the Good News. She remained to be a constant presence in the lives of those that she became acquainted with during her stay there.

Joyce was committed to and very emphatic about ministering to women who had experienced domestic violence or abuse and was candid about her own life experiences having endured domestic violence herself. She utilized her love for Christ, and her life experiences to establish rapport and relationships with women, and most of them were younger women. This enabled her to touch many souls and hearts.

Joyce is predeceased by her son, Frank Newton, and has existing children, Rhonda Newton, Howie Newton, Tony Goodjohn, and Ricky Goodjohn. She was also the grandmother of seventeen, and the great-grandmother of sixteen. She leaves behind a multitude of extended family members, loved ones and friends.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 1:00 P.M. at St. Paul UAME Church, 1267 Chapel Street, New Haven.
