Larry Wardlaw, 78, of Hamden, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025. Born on September 28, 1946, in Pendleton, South Carolina, he was the beloved son of the late Norman Wardlaw and Estelle Gambrell Wardlaw Bell, and stepson of the late Richard Bell.
Larry graduated from Wilbur Cross High School in 1965. A standout student-athlete, he was a valued member of the varsity basketball team, where his leadership and determination began to shine.
Following graduation, Larry joined the New Haven Police Department, where he served with distinction. He often reflected on his assignment during the historic visit of the Black Panther Party to New Haven—an experience that left a lasting impression on him and deepened his understanding of justice and community.
Larry’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to pursue opportunities beyond public service. After leaving the police force, he entered the oil and fuel industry, beginning his journey with O’Sullivan’s Fuel. His drive and vision soon led him to establish his own company—Wardoco Inc., a Black-owned commercial and residential heating fuel business. Under his leadership, Wardoco flourished, becoming a symbol of excellence and empowerment in the community.
His achievements did not go unnoticed. Larry was proudly featured in Black Enterprise magazine as part of their “Top 100 Minority-Owned Businesses” issue. He was also an active member of several elite business and civic organizations and played a key role in Democratic Party fundraising efforts.
Beyond business, Larry was a generous and passionate supporter of youth sports and community initiatives. He sponsored numerous local basketball and baseball teams and contributed to a wide range of charitable causes, always believing in the power of giving back.
Because of Larry’s accomplishments, multitudes were able to witness firsthand – that All Things Are Possible- then and now and most importantly with God.
He is lovingly remembered by his children: Lorette Wardlaw, Douglas Wardlaw (Angela), Karli Wardlaw, and Blaine Wardlaw (Joe). He was a cherished grandfather to Jordan Ringwood, Justin Garcia (Nathaly), Douglas S. Wardlaw, Matthew Molnar (Megan), Kaylah Anastasio, and Ariana Cortes; and a proud great-grandfather to Nolyne Foskey and Silas Molnar-Padilla. He is also survived by a special bonus niece/granddaughter, Simone Dennis.
Larry is survived by his siblings, Douglas Wardlaw (Addie) and Gloria Dennis (Paul), and leaves behind a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, his former spouse, Ronni Wardlaw, and dear friends. In addition to his parents and stepfather, he was predeceased by sister, Ernestine Copeland, and brother, Randy Wardlaw.
A memorial service to celebrate Larry’s life and legacy will be held on Friday, June 6, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight Street, New Haven.

Too many Larry Wardlaw was a friend, an acquaintance, a neighbor, one of the top 10 black entrepreneurs (Wardoco Inc) but to me, then and now, he was Dad, Daddy on some days. Even now, I do not feel like a grown woman with 2 grown girls of my own, I feel like his Blainey, forever his baby. Daddy I know your endless unfair fight has ended with you as the victor; pain free, mobile and at a peace we down here could never understand.
I know I will see you again.
I love you

Blaine
