Herbert Lewis Russell, 77, of New Haven, CT, entered eternal rest August 12, 2024. He was born in New Haven, CT, December 17, 1946, a son of the late Israel O. Russell and Alberta Gaylor Russell.

He was educated in the New Haven Public Schools and graduated from Wilbur Cross High School in 1965, where he played basketball and varsity football. After graduating from Wilbur Cross, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served in Italy from 1965-1968 as a Telegraphic Technician. During his military service he received the National Defense Service Medal for Sharpshooting. Upon his return from the military, he attended the Connecticut School of Electronics, after graduation he was hired by AT&T.

In October 1972, he married the love of his life, Earnestine Bromell and together they traveled the world. Herbert was a lover of all genres of music, an avid tennis and chess player and a certified scuba diver.

During his years at AT&T he held the position of Technical MSC RNOC and traveled between New Haven and New York on assignments. In 2001, Herbert retired from AT&T after 30+ years of service.

Herbert was predeceased by his wife Earnestine, parents Israel O. and Alberta Gaylor Russell, brothers David Israel, Sidney Scott, Ivor, William Aubrey (Billy) and Gerald Russell; sisters Ruby Hazel Slade, Mary Simone Russell, Muriel Carr and Violet Russell.

He is survived by his sister Lora (Pie) Russell of New Haven and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A celebration of Mr. Russell’s life and legacy will be held Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St., New Haven. A viewing will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. The burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
