David George Conte was born December 26, 1945, in New Haven, CT, to the late David A. Conte and Rose Saccavino Conte. He departed this earthly realm on December 11, 2024.
David lived his entire life in Connecticut, and during his early childhood years, he lived on Green Street in the historic Wooster Street section of New Haven, known during those years as “Little Italy.” His family moved to Hamden, CT, where he became a lifelong resident and attended Hamden public schools. He completed a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Providence College and a Master’s in Education from Southern Connecticut State University. He was a schoolteacher and taught for 37 years, beginning in the Cheshire Public Schools System and concluding in the New Haven Public School System, retiring from Troup Middle School. One of the highlights of his career was providing home school services for children who could not attend regular school day programming because of illness and other situations that required them to stay at home. His dedication to his students was unwavering, and he became a favorite teacher to many. He would often invite students for Christmas and Thanksgiving dinner when he became aware that circumstances at their home prevented holiday traditions. He was loved by so many of his students, and when he was out and about with his wife or friends, they would call out, “Hey, Mr. Conte!”
He met his wife, Delinda, when his stepdaughter Dana was ill as a child and needed homeschooling, which began the beginning of David and Delinda’s love story. After many roses, the “Love Is” comic strips, plants and trees, they were married 42 years ago.
He was an ardent motorcyclist, and it became his passion. He and several friends would periodically go on weekend trips, including rides throughout New England and beyond, wherever his motorcycle would take him. His love for motorcycles was not just a hobby but a way of life, and he often shared stories of his adventures with his friends and family, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He and Delinda have loved to travel, vacationing in Mexico and the Caribbean for many years.
He loved all sports but was a passionate fan of the New York Yankees and the UConn women’s basketball team.
He had a wonderful circle of friends, including those from elementary and high school, who stayed loyal to him to the very end. His impact on the community was profound, and his legacy will continue to inspire and uplift those fortunate enough to know him.
He leaves to cherish his memory to his devoted wife of 42 years, Delinda London Conte, whom he loved dearly, his daughter, Dana L. Cannady, son Jeremy S. Conte, sister Anne Tramontano (Dante), nephew Richard Tramontano (Rose Marie), and a host of relatives and many friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, Inc., 128 Dwight Street, New Haven, CT.
