Edna J. McClendon, 69, of Hamden, entered eternal rest on December 27, 2017. She was the beloved wife of Rowan McClendon.

Edna was born in Brunswick County, NC on June 28, 1948, a daughter of the late George W. Jones and Bessie Mae Brown Jones.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. McClendon was employed as a Manager at the former SNET Co. She was a longtime member of the Greater New Haven NAACP.

In the early 70’s Edna converted to Islam. She was a member of the Nation of Islam, Muhammad Mosque #40.

In addition to her husband, she leaves to cherish loving and lasting memories, daughters, Sheila Jenkins and Luretha McClendon Tolson (Wayne); brothers, Richard Young (Laura), Edwin H. Jones (Inez), Leon W. Jones (Michelle) and Alton Jones; grandchildren, Charles Steven Jenkins, Jr., Jamel, Jared, Patrice and Erica Jenkins and Tre, Taina, Maisa, Trinity, and Rowan Major Tolson; a great grandson, Chatumn Steven Jenkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; to include her name sake Edna Wilson.

She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Steven Jenkins, Sr.; brothers, David and George Jones, Jr. and Alexander Vereen; and a sister, Luretha Jones Saleem Brown.

A celebration of Mrs. McClendon’s life and legacy will be held Friday, January 5, 2018, at 11:00 AM at God’s Miracles Unlimited Outreach Ministries, 1441 Dixwell Ave., Hamden. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 9:00-11:00 AM. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
